Academy round-up 11/10/09

First of all, huge congratulations to Ryan Mason, Steven Caulker, Dean Parrett and Adam Smith – all in the England U19 squad for the European U19 Championship First Qualifying Round in Slovenia between October 9-14. The games are against Finland, Slovenia and Slovakia. They won the first game against Finland 3-1 yesterday – Ryan (1st cap) and Dean (3rd cap) started, Steven (1st cap) came on as a sub, and Adam (0 caps as yet) wasn’t used. Dean captained the side, and scored the 3rd goal in the 92nd minute.

In addition, Danny Rose (currently on loan at Peterborough) played for England U21 last night, and Jon Obika has just returned from an England U20 trip. Meanwhile, Paul McBride will join up with the Republic of Ireland U18s next week.

Well done for keeping us fans informed this group at the moment don’t seem has good has our other under 18 squad not so much in attack but in defence to concede four second half goals is bad .Hi don’t no if our goalkeeper going of had anything to do with this we still don’t seem to be able to beat the top sides. man uts arsenal and up to now we look to be 4th best when last year we were second .We should be number one when we get our new facility’s . If you are not already the Senior Archivist at WHL you should be.
Thanks again. Any thoughts on whether any of these youngsters might make it through to the senior squad?
The wastage rate of youngsters is incredible.
What do you think about the withdrawal from Reserve team leagues.
Be careful anything you say may well appear in a garbled form on my Blog after a decent interval to allow me to present your views as my own under the guise of ‘informed sources’

Hi David – I think the reason we lost yesterday will have had a lot to Adam Smith and Calum Butcher not being in the back 4. Smith’s away with England U19, and I presume Butcher is close to getting a much-needed loan move.

JimmyG2 – sounds like a wonderful job, I wonder if it exists? Very early to say with this particular crop of youngsters – we have a lot of 16 year olds in the team who are basically 3 months into a 24 month scholarship. Several have potential but, so far, I’d say I don’t rate any of them as highly as, for example, Mason or Caulker. That’s not to say that this time next year or in two years that I won’t.
‘Informed sources’ – very News of the World. I like it!

Next week's team selection for Burnley will be interesting. I think until Wanyama's back we need Dier in midfield,… https://t.co/onz0IVwliq
