Spurs lose on penalties in final of Volksbank Cup
Following on from my post this morning, we beat Werder Bremen 3-0 in the semi-final of the Volksbank Cup Under-19 tournament in Stemwede, Germany.
Sun 27 May (TuS Stemwede, Wehdem)
Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Werder Bremen
Scorers: Bentaleb, Zapata-Caceido, Ward
Alex McQueen (17) Kevin Stewart (18) Dominic Ball (16) Jack Barthram (18)
Kenneth McEvoy (17) Nabil Bentaleb (15) Tomislav Gomelt (17) Grant Ward (17)
Jack Munns (18) (c)
Victor Zapata-Caceido (17)
Thomas Gardiner (17) for Jack Barthram, 47.
We then went on to play Mexican side Club América in the final. We had good opportunities from a corner and a free kick, but the game was very tight and, despite our opponents having a player sent off late in the game, it eventually went to penalties having finished 0-0.
Both teams scored their first spot-kick, but we missed our second. All penalties were then scored until the fifth penalty when Club América missed, meaning that Spurs had a chance to take it to sudden death. It seems that we missed our final penalty, meaning that Club América won the tournament – congratulations to them – and we finished as runners up; a very impressive way to end the season!
