25-man Squad Update – September 2015

Now that the transfer window has closed, we are required to notify the Premier League of our 25-man squad.

To summarise the rule again, we are able to name a 25-man squad if eight of the players are ‘home grown’. We could name fewer than eight home grown players, but would need to also name fewer than 25 players in our squad – for example, if we only have seven home grown players, we can name a 24-man squad, 6/23, 5/22, etc. A home grown player is defined as follows:

… one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Welsh Football Association for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

We do not need to name players who are under 21 on our squad list; for the 2015/16 campaign, players considered ‘under 21’ will have been born on or after 1st January 1994.

Since the beginning of last season we have lost two ‘home grown’ players (Kyle Naughton and Aaron Lennon) from our squad list. We have also sold Grant Hall and Ryan Fredericks, who were on loan last season. We have added Kieran Trippier, who is home grown, but also four non-home grown players in Toby Alderweireld, Kevin Wimmer, Clinton Njie and Heung-min Son. Dele Alli falls into the under-21 category.

Also, since last season, Harry Kane has passed the age threshold and will need to be named in the squad, whereas last year he was simply included in our list of under-21 players.

We are then able to select any players who were born on or after January 1994 without needing to register them. This means that any of the following (plus the other first and second year academy scholars) would be available for selection. NB: I have presented them in age order.

We have only 22 players that would need to be included in our squad list, nine of whom are home grown players.

Our squad was in a very healthy situation leading up to the end of the transfer window – we could have made a further three signings without worrying about having to ‘make space’ for them. We also ended up keeping Adebayor and Fazio when it seems as though we wanted to sell both.

It's a better squad than last season. All be it it without the out & out striker or two we could of signed. We will just have to go at it with this squad. Good to see that a few more academy players will be stepping up with good reputations. Next season we loose adebeyour for good and release the wages for two good strikers in his place. One good thing, the trap door defenders have gone.

    Can't have everything or we'll win something! Personally I don't think Levy wants top four until after the stadium is finished. It costs more to maintain a top four team than you can get from being an alSo ran in the CL. We don't need a top team just yet just to stay in the top 7. I can also see us dropping out the top 8 next season on purpose so as to get a good run at top four in the 17-18 season. Makes financial and sporting sence. When you see what Liverpool and Man U were able to do once out of Europe altogether.

Windy, do you reckon Onomah will get a chance in the first team this season? And how good is McEvoy?

  I think Onomah will play some Europa League football. McEvoy's good but not great, I'd expect him to be gone within 18 months personally.

@windycoys, Why Christian Maghoma is the only U21 player you omitting from the list of academy players? I think he has lots of potential as the others. He has started well for the U21s

  There would have been a few before Maghoma in age order: Ryan Loft Armani Daly Chris Paul Christian Maghoma Charlie Hayford Charlie Owens Joe Muscatt Musa Yahaya Thomas Glover Cameron Carter Vickers Zenon Stylianides Tom McDermott Alfie Whiteman I just added Carter-Vickers on the end because he's likely to play, whereas Maghoma isn't.

I'm not as concerned as everyone else seems to be that we didn't get Berahino, I realise if Kane gets injured we're stuck for a centre forward, but i would argue we'd be in the same state if we had Berahino or not. If we were really looking for a Kane understudy it would have been Austin since Ings had already gone. Ultimately if Kane gets injured, Berahino wasnt going to step in and perform the same role, or provide anything Son didn't at Hamburg according to my hamburg supporting friend What I am disappointed in is that our first choice DM so far is Dier, and as much as i like him, and as well as he played recently, I think this year would have been better spent perfecting the CB role in europa and whenever the opportunity arose in the prem. So, my hope is whatever black mark Veljkovic seems to have earned against himself is mitigated by the need of at least cover of the dm position. Any such hope?

  I agree with a lot of what you say. I think a Kane back-up is needed. We'll probably regret it at some point. But it's not the end of the world. £25-30m for Berahino was too much. Veljkovic is apparently not high-tempo enough for Pochettino. A real shame. At some clubs he'd be a first team squad regular by now.

    That's a shame, it's nice getting specific players to fit a system, but until that's the case I really wish they would change the system to fit the players. Also really wish we had managed to convince Ings to some to us.

    Sorry for the late comment -- doesn't leaving Veljkovic out seem to be a case of not only selecting players that only fit within a narrowly-defined system, but also playing favorites? Veljkovic should fit Levy's model of cheap, young talent that could develop for a profit. But in Veljkovic's case, it sounds like he would even be useful for us, especially without a true DM, at least for Europa League. It's decisions like this that make me wonder what exactly the front office and Poch employ are thinking in finding talent, let alone what Mitchell's black box is telling them, if they can't simply make the best of the talent they have around, and if they aren't willing to fully live by the systems philosophy and pay fully for those positions they have a need (e.g. DM or CF).
