Analysis of the goal conceded against West Ham (18/12)

Jarvis’ goal – Maiga beats Chiriches in the air from a goal kick, and flicks on to Taylor. He brings the ball down, and intelligently finds Jarvis, who finishes well.

Goal1

2

Adrian’s punt upfield sees Maiga beat Chiriches in the air – not for the first time after his introduction.

3

Capoue drops off Taylor far too much, leaving him room to assess his options.

4

Sigurdsson tracks Jarvis’ run, and then passes him onto Walker.

5

Walker doesn’t really read Taylor’s excellent pass, whereas Jarvis does – and he finishes it superbly.

Maiga’s goal – West Ham keep the ball alive after an overhit cross seems to be going out, and Morrison works the ball wide to Diame. Maiga gets up early and powers above Capoue and Walker to find the corner with a header from Diame’s cross.

Goal2

1

Jarvis retrieves an overhit cross brilliantly…

2

… and lays off to Morrison. Notice West Ham’s three against two advantage at this point.

3

Morrison’s fresh legs mean that he is able to skip away from a tiring Sigurdsson.

4

He gets the ball wide to Diame with a clever pass.

5

Spurs are still very disorganised from the resultant cross, with Capoue left marking two, and Walker therefore having to make a difficult decision.

6

Maiga, in between Walker and Capoue, gets up early.

7

His header finds the corner.

There was lots of knee-jerking post match. Spurs picked what they thought was their strongest possible side, and could have put the tie to bed early, missing a host of chances in the opening few minutes. West Ham started with a weakened side, but as Spurs’ barely match-fit players tired (or went off injured in Townsend’s case), Allardyce smelt blood and brought on his key men (Diame and Morrison).

As Spurs’ energy was sapped, West Ham were rejuvenated. Maiga bullied Chiriches in the air and it was no surprise that his knock-on led to the opener. He then got a deserved goal when he got above Capoue and Walker to meet the ball.

It’s far too early to judge what Sherwood may or may not do over the Christmas period. We were playing without key men, with Rose and Adebayor not match-fit and unable to last the match, and lost Townsend through injury.

His team selection was a bold one, with Adebayor used to drop off and create triangles, and Sigurdsson spreading the play nice and early to bring the wide men into the game. Had Defoe converted a chance or two, Sherwood would be being lauded for his “gung ho” (in his own words) approach. Unfortunately, we were left to rue missed chances, and have to pick ourselves up for the weekend.

  1. The problem was that West Ham's subs did their job. but our did not.
  2. Adebayor was brilliant. I can't recall one misplaced pass (which is more than I can say for the others). He ran tirelessly and scored a great goal. If he can play like this every week, he should be in the team every week. Like to see him play with Soldado
    1. Yeah, the problem is that he doesn't play like that every week. Big mistake by AVB to not use him, IMO. But hire the manager and let him manage. Crazy.
  3. For that first goal, it's Sig who loses his man, not Walker. You say Walker doesn't read his pass, but look at his choices there. He has to cover the guy with the ball turning onto his left and getting a shot away, but he's also aware of the runner. You're basically criticising him for making the wrong choice (or being stuck between making certain choices). For not being able to mind-read, perhaps.
    1. Yep Siggy's fault and he knew it.
  4. Ade's performance only was more than enough reason to justify AVB's sacking
  5. West Ham deserved the win yesterday, Spuds are a terrible football club after spending 100m and nothing to show for it this season, in fact don't think you will ever win a trophy ever again
  6. I clicked on this link to see what you had to say but I have to say the last thing I wanted to see is clips of their goals!!! Still too angry and too early!
  7. Who next because I don't think Tim and Les have much to offer. I'd rather see Frank Rijkaard than Frank Der boer.
  8. 5 out of 8 defenders injured and no Sandro. Ssme as against Liverpool and one of the fit ones is Fryers who isn't up to it yet. I'm a big Adebayor fan. He just needs a lot of attention. Bring back BAE!!!!!!!
  9. Dawson will be back. At least he's good in the air unlike Chiriches and Capoue. Dawson should perform better now that AVB's high back line has been ditched. His lack of pace wont be such a disadvantage in future.
  10. Poor Walker! He had to mark his man and also patch the hole left by an out of position Capoue/slow-turning Daws so often this season. Result: He failed to do both.
  11. Siggi was responsible for losing Jarvis in the first goal. At least he showed frustration for his failure.
  12. AVB could only use Ade and BAE if they show they would first cooperate with him. The coach will lose his hand on the team if he failed to keep discipline. Well, we'll soon be seeing BAE back if we don't find a LB in January.
  13. Welcome back uncertainty. Ah well. Lloris shouldn't be getting beat on his near post, ever. More than that I'm just too despondent to go into, fatigue seems to have played a part. No idea who I want for a manager, right now I'll support Sherwood to my fullest, though I would suggest Freund be reinstated to his full post of assistant. And politely ask Ledley to do some consultation with the squads and give them the you think you have it bad routine DoF a factor? possibly personal but remember AVB specifically requested it and complained when there wasn't one, so I don't know.
  14. With so many on the injured list, the loss to WHU may be a good thing now that the players get some rest in January and could work on a style which will bring in 18-20 wins in the coming 22 remaining PL games.
  15. […] on him, but he looked sluggish and unfit, lacking sharpness and energy. He was arguably partially at fault for the goals West Ham scored in the League Cup […]
  16. Woah! I'm really enjoying the template/theme of this website. It's simple, yet effective. A lot of times it's hard to get that "perfect balance" between superb usability and visual appeal. I must say you have done a very good job with this. In addition, the blog loads super fast for me on Opera. Excellent Blog!
